(about 1.3k km) around the island's periphery. Iceland's mountainous interior, known as the Highlands, is still largely pristine wilderness, accessible only by those equipped with appropriate four-wheel transportation. The Icelandic Highlands. Europes largest wilderness area. One of the most difficult places in Iceland to get to. To get to some of these places a medium or large 4x4 car is required. As one has to cross steep inclines, bumpy roads and deep rivers.

The reward is to see some of the most amazing landscapes during a short window between June and September ususally.
