It was filmed in the Cuatro Ciénegas Biosphere Reserve, a wetland area within the vast Chihuahuan desert that covers much of northern Mexico and parts of the Southwestern USA and west Texas. Home to over 150 endemic species of flora and fauna, the reserve's lifeforms and their adaptation to this unique environment are being studied to assess the possibility of life on Mars.

The Cuatrociénegas Valley is considered the most relevant wetland within the Chihuahuan desert and one of the most prominent in México. Worldwide it is classified as a RAMSAR site (wetland of international importance), and is also considered within the Priority Conservation Regions developed by the World Wildlife Fund. On November 7, 1994, it was declared a Protected Natural Area. In this protected natural area of 84 hectares, located in the municipality of the same name in the state of Coahuila, inhabits a wide range of species, many of them endemic (exclusive to the region), which are the most important justification for their categorization, among others: puppy of the Bolson, Cuatrocienegas mojarra, Yaqui catfish, Potosina carp, Soft Helmet turtle, Scorpion grass, wild peppermint, Parras maguey and aquatic isopod. The highest values of endemism are recorded in mollusks, crustaceans and fish. This area has more than 500 pools scatter around the whole valley.
