AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : Chicago became the most important North American transportation hub in the 19th century on the strength of its water connection both to the Great Lakes as well as to the Mississippi River. The latter connection is through the Chicago River, which once emptied into Lake Michigan but whose flow was reversed in the mid-1800's to connect to a series of different canals which provided a link to the Mississippi. In this drone video by FoxFlight 2020, you'll fly along stretches of the Chicago River, which flows through the heart of downtown.

The Chicago river runs through downtown Chicago, IL. While it used to empty into Lake Michigan, it was reversed with a lock and some canals inland to drain FROM Lake Michigan into the nearby Des Plaines river and thus eventually into the Mississippi river basin. Regardless of the direction, it is a major scenic feature of the downtown area.

This video covers a part of it—from the lock at Lake Michigan and Lake Shore Drive, along Wacker Drive, passing under Columbus Dr., Michigan Ave., Wabash, State, Dearborn, Clark, and La Salle streets. Some of the famously spectacular architecture of Chicago is right along or can be viewed from this stretch of the Chicago River including the Wrigley Building, the Chicago Tribune, Trump Hotel and Tower, the largest Hyatt hotel in the world, the new St. Regis tower, and the Hancock Building a ways up Michigan Avenue.

Shot over 2 different days in mid-September, the weather couldn't have been better. (Especially considering it was followed a day later by the "monsoon game" home opener for the Chicago Bears... at which I got very soggy while attending!). One thing we didn't get a chance to do because of the rest of our schedule in town was get some night shots of this same strip. The views are amazing. Next time, right?
