In 1813, the city was the site of one of the pivotal battles of the Napoleonic Wars. In the Battle of Leipzig (sometimes called the Battle of Nations), coalition forces defeated those of Napoleon and forever squashed his hopes of controlling Europe. In terms of the forces involved, it was the largest battle in European history up to World War I.
