With over 250 videos on AirVūz, you could say Alex Kintner, aka FPV pilot KittFPV really loves FPV Freestyle. While there aren’t many bandos to shred or skyscrapers to dive in Harlan, Iowa, there is plenty of space to fly in his backyard. “I mean seriously, it’s a dream come true to live where we’re at, you know? When I first started getting into FPV I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I have the perfect place to fly. I absolutely have to get into it, you know?” Alex was a newbie to flying FPV a little over a year ago, but already had pretty nimble fingers to get him started. “I had a little experience with R.C. My grandpa fixed one of my other grandpa’s planes one time so that was a neat experience. Other than that I played bass guitar for a long time and that was probably another part of it. Way back in the day I bought one of those A.R. drone things and messed around with that and it didn’t do much. Then I really wanted the Phantom, but instead I bought one of those SYMA X8 things that’s kind of like a Phantom then realized it wasn’t quite doing it. But, I realized I really enjoyed the hobby. I ended up getting a Phantom and treating the SYM like a race drone for about three days until it blew away. I had a craving for speed and technical maneuvers. It’s fun to get aerial shots and all that but I prefer to be in full manual control. So I went on RC Groups and bought a used, Blackout Mini H, and then have just been obsessed ever since, I guess!” Obsessed is one word to describe how Alex feels about flying fpv freestyle, but it’s certainly not the only one. “Epic. Awesome – awesome or epic, I don’t know. It’s so many things to me that it’s hard to pick one word. Beautiful, fantastic; any of those grandiose, awesome words are what I would choose. Awe-inspiring, how about that? I feel kind of like a bird when I’m flying around, but then there’s this weird…it’s almost like you’re an object that’s just capable of defying gravity. Like a force, or a presence almost, that’s kind of how I look at it. Not even a physical object necessarily, just the flow. When I try to do something when I come backwards through gaps or back over top of them in tumbling weird, ways, it’s almost like you’re thinking off of your back shoulder or something and you’re more thinking from the craft, not from a bird or any sort of front-facing kind of a view, but you’re more thinking as a ball or something that can just shift around any which way.” Alex's FPV videos don't involve a lot of VLOG-ing, which I attributed to his feelings about flight. However, he says it’s much less intentional than that. “You know, it’s all happening just really organically I guess. I’ve found myself more often now including a little bit as I end or as I talk to the camera while I’m ending or just of the goofy things I saw when I crash or whatever else. I have a feeling that more of that type of stuff is going to happen in the future. I’m fascinated by the VLOG, and it’s interested because you have to plan the way you do your entire day or the way you travel differently when you have the camera going on you all the time. We’ll see what the future brings, I guess. I put way too much thought into who I resembled, and even though it’s great to acknowledge where you’re coming from, a lot of people in the comments specifically one video where I put ‘Mr. Steele vs. Johnny FPV,’ or something like that, said just be who you are ya know? I was trying to establish who I was, but it was a great reminder that ‘oh yeah, people enjoy what I’m doing because it’s different, not because it’s one of those other FPV pilots.” Alex hasn’t let living in Iowa deter him from flying in the winter. In fact he really enjoys being an FPV pilot in the changing seasons. “Each season has been my favorite one to fly in currently, because it feels like as I go along my flying feels so much more natural that it’s hard to look back. Of course I like it, but it’s just different in now I feel like I’m more able to express myself through the motions of the quad. I’m a little nervous about the snow because it’s like having water everywhere. Spring is going to be amazing as soon as the ground starts turning green is a really beautiful time too. My backyard looks really neat around that time too. I just love them all. I don’t enjoy the cold as much, but oh well. Whatever has the best colors or the best kind of contrasting, definitive kind of look going on, that’s the season I want to be in.” Hear more about some of Alex’s favorite videos on Behind the FPV Goggles Extra, only on AirVuz.com
