Part of East Prussia (Germany) prior to World War II, the district is home to over 2,000 lakes. Interspersed amidst vast forests, this region historically represented the frontier between Germany and Russia. Here was fought the momentous Battle of Tannenberg in 1914 when a Russian field army was encircled by a smaller German force in the opening weeks of World War I.

Masuria (Polish: About this sound Mazury (help·info), German: Masuren, Masurian: Mazurÿ) is a region in northern Poland famous for its 2,000 lakes. Before the end of World War II, it was mostly inhabited by Polish-speaking (Masurian dialect) Lutheran Masurians and constituted a part of East Prussia. Masuria occupies much of the Masurian Lake District. Administratively, it belongs to Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Its biggest city is Ełk, often regarded as its capital. It has territory of about 10,000 km2 and population of 500,000.
