The Araguaia runs a largely south-to-north course of about 1.6k mi. (around 2.6k km), ending in confluence with the Tocantins River just east of the city of Marabá, , in the northern state of Pará. Part of the eastern Amazon Basin, the river is characterized by diverse wildlife, including many species of birds.
