The town of Velia is located on the Tyrrhenian Sea in Salerno, the southernmost province of the Campania region. Founded in the 6th century BC, Velia was an important city in the historical region of Magna Graecia - the name given by the Romans to the coastal areas of southern Italy which had been colonized by Greeks. The town is featured in Book 6 of Virgil's Aeneid.
