Published 10/26/2020 09:40The New York City Drone Film Festival was held digitally over the weekend, with the top drone films in the world showcased on the big screen. A total of nine winners plus a top prize in photography were awarded to drone cinematographers. History was made at this year’s festival, as filmmaker Ani Acopian became the first female to win the event’s best-in-show prize. Acopian directed the film ““AWAL Presents ‘A World Artists Love,’” which not only won the Cinematic FPV category but was crowned as the show’s overall winner. The short film followed several scenes of people as a drone piloted by Robert McIntosh made its way seamlessly from one shot to the next, complete with unique graphics and upbeat music. “Thank you so much for this incredible award. I’ve never done an acceptance video during a pandemic, so this is a bit awkward, but seriously, one of my projects I’ve ever made. I’m really thankful to everyone who helped me with it.”
A total of nine video categories and a still photography category were included in this year’s all-digital festival. More than 10,000 films were submitted this year on AirVuz.com, and those were whittled down to 36 nominees.
Other category winners included: “Cappadocia” by Beautiful Destinations (Landscape), “Budapest: A Taste of Europe” by Timelab.pro (Cityscapes), “Drone Demoreel 2020” by Skynamic Drone (Showreel), “Hong Kong Protests 2019” by Droneland (Narrative/Documentary), “Dronie by FPV” by Ruben Caser (Dronie), “One Shot Motocross” by Johnny FPV (Extreme Sports), “The Biggest Nuclear Icebreaker” by Timelab.pro (X-Factor), “Empty NYC Streets, From Harlem to Wall Street” by Aran77 (Lockdown) and “Lost in the Russian Woods” by Panvelvet (Still Photography).
The two-day festival also included a live digital expos with sponsor booths, where attendees could chat live with representatives and watch demo videos. Additionally, those attending the festival could chat with each other on the filmmaker’s yacht. Everyone who purchased tickets to the festival also received access to a library of 30+ hours of master classes and exclusive interviews with top drone professionals. And even though the festival is over, those master classes are still available for purchase. Stay tuned for more details on how you can get access to the master class library.
