The Acropolis is an ancient fortress complex situated on a rock plateau about 150 meters (just under 500 ft.) over the Greek capital city. Consisting of the Parthenon temple and several outlying building, the complex was built during the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century BC, under the direction of the great Athenian leader Pericles .
