Long-awaited rules for commercial drone use in the U.S. were released in August. Now, a month later, the first delivery drone by a major company has landed.
The company: United Parcel Service. The delivery: an inhaler. Status: successful.
UPS says the flight happened Thursday and was in partnership with drone manufacturer startup CyPhy Works.
The drone flew autonomously from Beverly, Massachusetts to a patch of grass 3 miles away on an island near Boston.
UPS has previously tested drones for indoor use and disaster relief, but Thursday’s flight marks the beginning of tests to remote destinations.
The scale of the company’s future drone services has not yet been released.
