With public concern that drones could collide with an airplane at all at an all time high, US officials are taking matters into their own hands. The Federal Aviation Administration is leading a group of government, industry and academic agencies in testing UAS detection software at JFK Airport in New York. The FAA and it’s partners are trying to see if the FBI’s current UAS detection system will work in a commercial airport setting. They say the increase in drone sightings at some of the nation’s busiest airports spurred the need for the testing, saying “We face many difficult challenges as we integrate rapidly evolving UAS technology into our complex and highly regulated airspace. This effort at JFK reflects everyone’s commitment to safety.” Five fixed wing and rotorcraft UAS were used, with about 40 separate tests taking place. No word on if the tests are proving successful, but after seeing the international hysteria rising over a plastic bag at London’s Heathrow Airport, we hope the testing proves effective and quickly integrable.
