Now more than ever, drones are being used in all kinds of emergency situations by brave men and women around the world. Natural disaster response, accident investigation, crowd control as well as search and rescue for missing persons. Drones are also making their mark as an invaluable tool for firefighters.
The New Haven, Connecticut Fire Department started using drones to monitor fires about a year and a half ago. Deputy Chief Robert Schwartz proposed that they could be of great use in observing and preventing emergencies.
Heavy smoke from a recent condo fire along the New Haven waterfront was making it difficult for firefighters to douse the flames. Chief Schwartz believes that drones provide many advantages for the department and their various emergency services. He also has his eye on an upgraded model that has some incredible new features.
Chief Schwartz says that using a drone with thermal imaging would greatly help the crew find people who are trapped inside burning buildings, a feature that will undoubtedly become a new standard of emergency rescue services.
