AV News: A Look at the Drone Vision Van

German automaker Mercedes is developing a different approach to the idea of drone delivery.

For its next-generation delivery vans, drones will play a central role. The company partnered with Matternet and is developing a somewhat autonomous delivery system.

Using a redesigned, all-electric van, a delivery driver stopping in a residential area would make traditional deliveries, while the drone delivered smaller packages to nearby homes.

Mercedes says to think of the truck as a rolling warehouse: An automated loading system in the van would feed the drone. GPS integrated with the van’s delivery map would guide the drone’s round-trip- taking off and landing from the vehicle’s roof. as a safety feature, the drone would have a parachute.

While it’s all still in the concept stage, Mercedes says this delivery system- in a denser, urban setting- would be emission free.
