The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeong chang, South Korea are underway and drones are being used in a multitude of ways. If you missed the Opening Ceremonies, you missed the Guiness Book of World Records’ setting aerial light show. Intel was back at with over 1,200 of their “shooting star” drones, creating multicolored images of a snowboarder that turned into the Olympic rings. The team said the light-weight drones were tested in extreme temperatures and that one pilot could control 1,000’s of them because of their GPS capabilities. In addition to the No Fly Zone surrounding the Olympic Games, security has drones capable of catching drones. Similar to what we showed you back in 2016, several news outlets have reported that security and anti-terrorism forces will be using these net-wielding drones to grab other UAV’s out of the sky. A SWAT team practiced multiple scenarios, including if a drone were to hover over a bus full of athletes, before the games began. Like they did in both Sochi and Rio, the Olympic broadcast crew is incorporating drones into their daily coverage. You can see a drone here, covering gold medalist Jamie Anderson’s run.
