The city of Serpukhov, located in the south of the Moscow Region, is a popular destination for day trips. People come here to take a break from the hustle and bustle of large cities, examine ancient architectural creations and admire the landscapes of the Oka River. Serpukhov is one of the oldest cities in the Moscow region. The first mention of the city dates back to 1339. In those days Serpukhov was the center of the volost inherited by the third son of Ivan Kalita - Andrei Ivanovich. The first wooden Kremlin in Serpukhov was built at the end of the 14th century. But the construction of defensive structures did not save Serpukhov - at the beginning of the 15th century, the city was plundered twice. By the beginning of the 16th century, Serpukhov became one of the most important sections of the line of defensive structures on the outskirts of Moscow. In 1521 the city was ravaged by the Crimean Khan Mehmed I Girey - after that it was decided to build a white-stone Kremlin. Since 1572, the Great Regiment of the Russian Army has been located in Serpukhov. Due to its border position during the 16th – 17th centuries, Serpukhov repeatedly played an important strategic role. In the 18th century, Serpukhov became one of the largest cities in the Moscow region. Linen, cloth and silk factories operated in the city. In the 19th century, the main occupation of the townspeople was trade.
