A trip through Portugal | Costa Nova & Aveiro

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :

Explore the coast of Portugal's Centro region in this terrific drone video by contributor Airviewstudio.  The video was filmed over and around the town of Aveiro and the nearby Costa Nova beach area, which lie in the northern part of the Centro Region, about an hour's drive south of the city of Porto.  The coastline here takes a complex shape as the convergence of several rivers created a series of coastal lagoons and inland waterways, and Aveiro is sometimes referred to as the Venice of Portugal due to its canals and other waterways.

Costa Nova is a delightful village famed for its magnificent sandy coastline and colourful beach houses.

These quirky and charming seaside homes are painted in traditional striped patterns, attracting social media savvy visitors who flock to have their photos taken in front of their cheery exteriors.

Costa Nova lies on a narrow sandbar peninsula that shelters the Ria de Aveiro (Aveiro lagoon). On the lagoon side you'll find a small fishing harbour and the rows of striped houses, with the seaward side facing the mighty Atlantic Ocean and boasting a glorious sandy beach. This is a wonderful beach for a calm summer's day, but please note that there can be very strong sea breezes.

Aveiro is a popular tourist destination, famous for its canals and colourful boats known as moliceiros, which is why it is called the Portuguese Venice. The city is located on the edge of the Ria de Aveiro, a saltwater lagoon that has historically produced a large amount of fish and is also used for seaweed farming. You can also visit the salt pans and see what the traditional process of salt production was like. Today, Aveiro is a thriving university town with an authentic fishing district, ornate buildings and many imposing religious buildings.Although it is a hard-working region, it also contains many natural areas, such as the beautiful beaches of Costa Nova, the incredible pine forests of the Reserva Natural das Dunas de São Jacinto and the Passadiços da Ria de Aveiro, the panoramic trail that runs along the southern shore of the lagoon.Aveiro is one of the best destinations for a day trip from Porto, as there is a regular train service connecting both cities.
