Rio Ave, the Spring Ave is a Portuguese river, born in the Serra da Cabreira, municipality of Vieira do Minho, about 1200 m high, in Pau da Bela. It travels about 85 km until it empties into the Atlantic Ocean, south of Vila do Conde. Its hydrographic basin covers an area of approximately 1390 km², covering 15 municipalities. The river bathes successively the municipalities of Vieira do Minho, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Guimarães, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Santo Tirso, Trofa and Vila do Conde. Its most important tributaries are the river East (right bank) and the river Vizela (left bank), also highlighting the Pele and Pelhe rivers.
