Established in 1979, the park covers a bit under 700 square km (264 square mi.) in the French Alps, straddling the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Alpes-Maritimes Departments near the southeastern part of the country. It includes seven distinct valleys, and is home to 600 km (around 360 mi.) of marked footpaths. The park sees close to a million visitors per year.
