As defined by the CIA Factbook, Southeastern Europe includes Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, plus five of the six former Yugoslavian nations. The Balkan region features incredible physical scenery such as the snow-capped Carpathian Mountains and Balkan Mountains and white sand beaches of the Adriatic, Mediterranean, and Black Seas. Culturally, it is home to some of the some of the most well-preserved medieval towns, castles, and fortresses of Europe, as well as some of its most significant churches and cathedrals, reasons why it's been a prime filming location for HBO's Game of Thrones TV series.
