Drones Over Central Norway

Check out this magnificent drone video of Trondheim, Norway, compliments of AirVuz contributor fotoknoff.  A port city in Norway's Central region, Trondheim is Norway's third-largest city and the center of Norway's fourth-largest urban area, after Oslo, Bergen, and Stavanger.  The capital of Norway during the Viking Age, Trondheim is one of Europe's greatest centers of higher learning as well as medical research.  Its best-known landmark is the Nidaros Cathedral; seen clearly in the video, it is Norway's equivalent of Westminster Abbey.

While the Scandinavian country of Norway is not typically associated with mining, at one point it did have substantial copper resources.  Production was centered in Roros, a small town in the central part of the country.  It was the site of copper mining as early as the 17th century, and at one point was one of best sources for the red metal.  In this video, contributor Hopenorway gives us an aerial view of this mining town, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site having ceased mining operations in the 1970's.

The rock formations of the coast and islands of Norway create some of the most technically difficult rock climbing spots anywhere in the world.  The conditions range from sheer cliffs to gigantic caves.  Many of the world's best rock climbers travel to Norway to practice their art.  In this video, top AirVuz contributor and plot Scientik used a drone to film Adam Ondra and his girlfriend Iva Vejmolová, in the Hanshelleren Cave.  The cave is located in Flatanger in Trøndelag County, in the Central region of the country.

Check out this fantastic Fall drone video from Central Norway, compliments of top AirVuz contributor hopenorway.  Heavily forested and with hundreds of lakes and streams, the official Central Norway region includes Trøndelag and Møre og Romsdal Counties.  Beautiful any time of year, the video catches the area just as the summer is beginning to transition to fall.  Check it out for some great top-down forest shots, waterfall footage, shots of the mountains which run down part of the region, and some epic shots of kayaking and longboarding.  

Top contributor hopenorway created this magnificent drone video of a well known cathedral in Central Norway.  Trondheim's Nidaros Cathedral pre-dates the Reformation - it was built during the Middle Ages, completed around 1300.  Today, it's considered the most important church in the Church of Norway, which is a branch of Lutheranism.  The structure was built on the burial site of King Olav II, the country's patron saint, and historically has been the coronotion site for the kings and queens of Norway.  

Only about 3% of the land area of Norway is under cultivation, primarily in the central and southern parts of the country.  While cultivation of wheat and certain other grains has declined, cultivation of oats, used primarily for livestock, has grown dramatically.  Top contributor Hope Norway used a drone to film an oat field being harvested.  This type of aerial footage is extremely helpful in understanding what large scale harvesting looks like. 

Contributor Hopenorway created this epic drone video of the start of a Triathalon event in Central Norway.  The Trondheim Triathlon, which runs in August, covers 2.4k meters swimming, followed by a 50 km bike ride, and finishing with a 12 km run.  What is shown in the video is the start of the swimming portion of the event, which began at Munkholmen, a small iconic-looking island in Trondheim's harbor near the mouth of the Nidelva River.  

In Central Norway, kayaks aren't just for getting from point A to point B.  As contributor Hopenorway shows us, kayak polo is a "thing".  From Trondheim, the major city in the region, he brings us an aerial view of a kayak polo game.  It's just like water polo except, well except instead of swimming it's played on kayaks.  Given what are likely fairly cold water temperatures, perhaps it's just as well to be floating on the water rather than swimming in it.  

Contributor Philipmi created this beautiful aerial mini-tour of Trondheim, the principal city of Norway's Central region.  With a population of about 170,000, Trondheim is the third largest city in the country after Oslo and Bergen.  It's situated in Trøndelag County, one of two which make up Central Norway as an administrative region.  Trondheim is known as being one of the most educated cities in Europe, and is home to numerous universities and research organizations.  

While Central Norway is not as mountainous as other parts of the country, parts of the region do have some mountains and other natural features which are more like the landscape of Western Norway.  In this video, contributor Hopenorway does one of his trademark pullout "dronie" shots over a mountain called Litjefjellet ("small mounain") which rises just under 800 meters (about 2.7k ft.) above sea level.  It is near Romsdal, in Møre og Romsdal county, southwest of Trondheim.

Ryssdalen, Trøndelag is a valley in Norway that is close to Sorvika and Nordvika off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Central Norway.   In this video, AirVuz contributor and first person view (FPV) pilot Lervik FPV takes us on an epic FPV flight through the golden valley on a bright afternoon. After a a ride through the valley, it is time to hit the mountains. The clean line he flies, along with the crisp and clear footage he takes with his FPV-equipped racing quad makes this an absolutely spectacular video. 

On this episode of The Drone Dish, host Ryan Hoag talks with André Hope, AKA Hopenorwway. André hails from Trondheim, Norway.  Most of his videos are filmed in the Central Norway region, of which Trondheim is the largest and most important city.  His very first film, "Winter in Norway” played on a billboard in Times Square earlier this year and went on to screen at many drone-themed festivals around the world including Belgium, Italy and Los Angeles.
