Serbia: Where Are You Now?

escapeaway...

Top contributor and pilot Escapeaway created this beautiful drone video following a trip to Serbia, a Southeast European country which regained its independence following the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990's.  The video shows the astounding natural scenery of this country on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe.  Most of the video was shot in the southern, more mountainous part of the country, along the Uvac River.  The highlight is some spectacular bird's eye views of the Uvac Gorge.

First Production created this beautiful drone video of the Serbian capital city Belgrade, decked out for the Christmas holiday.  The video was shot on a DJI Inspire drone with a Zenmuse X5 camera.  Belgrade is the largest city in Serbia by good measure, and is the last (ie downtream) of the great cities on the Danube River, which runs through Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest before it Belgrade en route to the Black Sea.  With a metropolitan population of about 1.7 million as of 2019, it's one of the larger cities in Southeastern Europe.

In this video, contributor First Production gives us a drone's eye view of Zemun, Serbia.  Once a truly independent city, it has more or less been absorbed into the greater Belgrade area with the growth of the (nearby) Serbian capital city.   The city lies on the Danube River, just upstream from Belgrade and a rather further distance downstream from Novi Sad.  Prior to World War I, Zemun was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was fiercely contested during the bloody World War I battles between Austria-Hungary and Serbia.

Content creator and drone pilot Zmijans created this amazing aerial video of the EXIT Music Festival, one of the largest in Serbia.  It's held in early July in Novi Sad, Serbia's second largest city and generally considered its cultural capital.  The festival has been running for nearly 20 years, and features internationally known musical acts.  While Novi Sad isn't the largest city in Serbia (that title goes to Belgrade) it is in some respects the cultural center of the country and thus a natural spot for large events such as EXIT.

Contributor Borac created this beautiful drone video of some urban art in Novi Sad, the second largest city in Serbia after the capital, Belgrade.  The mural is of a fearsome-looking tiger, obviously far from its home environment.  Novi Sad is situated in north-central Serbia, and in many respects it's considered the country's cultural capital.  It's on the Danube River, the great waterway that connects Novi Sad to upstream cities such as Vienna and Budapest as well as downstream cities like Belgrade and ultimately to the Black Sea.

The Danube is one of the most important rivers in Europe, and it is without question the most important river in Serbia.  The great river flows through its two largest cities: the capital city Belgrade, and Novi Sad, the latter of which lies upstream of the former.  In this video, contributor and drone pilot Zmijans gives us an aerial look at a nearly frozen Danube as it flows through Novi Sad, a city of about 300,000 which is considered to be the cultural capital of this Southeastern European country.

The Church of St. Sava in Belgrade, Serbia is one of the most important cultural landmarks in this Southeast European nation and one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world.  Dedicated to St. Sava, it is built on the presumed grave of the father of the Serbian branch of Eastern Orthodoxy.  Commissioned in the interwar years when Belgrade was part of Yugoslavia, its construction was interrupted by World War II and only completed in 1984.  Check it out from above in this drone video by AirVuz contributor sphereview.

Check out this stunning drone video from the Balkan Mountains in Serbia, compliments of contributor Nature Drones.  The range forms a rough "j" shape, serving as the natural boundary between Serbia and Bulgaria before running east through central Bulgaria to the Black Sea.  While the range's highest peaks are in Bulgaria, they reach as high as almost 2.2k meters above sea level (7.1k ft.) at the summit of Midžor in Serbia.  As you will see in the video, in the wintertime the mountains are very popular with skiers.

The northern half of Serbia is covered by the Pannonian Plain, which is part of the broader region known as the Great Hungarian Plain.  One of the most important agricultural centers of Southeastern Europe, the plains of Serbia have seen a surge in acreage devoted to sunflowers.  In recent years, sunflower plantings in Serbia have increased to 250k hectares, or over 600k acres.  Check out this beautiful drone video of seemingly endless Serbian sunflower fields in this excellent piece by contributor zmijans.
