This collection covers two of the eight Federal Districts of Russia: the Ural and Volga regions. The Ural District covers six oblasts (provinces) in the area of the Ural Mountains, which divide European and Asian Russia. The largest of these, Sverdlovsk, is home to Yekaterinburg, Russia's fourth largest city and the center of its third biggest metropolitan area. The Volga District lies to the west of the southern half of the Urals District. Centered on the Volga, the longest and most important of Russian rivers, it's made up of fourteen oblasts and is home to some of the most important historical cities in Russia, such as Nizhny Novgorod. Both regions are home to a great many sites of cultural significance, including numerous historic Eastern Orthodox churches.
