Phoenix, Arizona is the de facto regional capital of the Southwestern USA. The state capital, Phoenix is now the USA's fifth-largest city by population, an astounding fact given that the city had fewer than 100k residents as recently as World War II. It's the center of a vast metropolitan area known variously as Phoenix Metropolitan Area and the Valley of the Sun, which now home to nearly five million people. Phoenix is located near the edge of one of North America's great deserts (the Sonoran), close to the middle of the state. Despite its explosive population growth, Phoenix offers some of the best hiking, rock climbing, and other outdoor recreation areas of any major US city. At the same time, its 15x (core city) growth over the last 70 years has allowed it to become a big-time sports city, as evidenced by its state-of-the-art stadiums and arenas. In this drone video collection, you can check out the great Sunbelt city from an aerial point of view. Aerial photo: Phoenix, from the Mountains by AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Blaze.

Top contributor Jeff Walrich did a phenomenal job with this drone video from the areas surrounding Phoenix, Arizona. The city which had a population of less than 100k as late as the 1940's is now the center of a metropolitan area of nearly 5 million. However, even as this desert city has grown it still offers some of the best close-in nature spots of any large US city. Despite decades of spreading sprawl, it's still possible drive for less than a half hour, and feel like you're a million miles from civilization.

Since 2018 it's been called State Farm Stadium, and it's in Glendale, about 15 km (around 10 mi.) northwest of downtown Phoenix. The (expandable) 63.4k stadium opened in 2006, and for most of its life it was called the University of Phoenix Stadium.
