2021 Drone Videos of the Week: Episode 8

Former DVOW Finalist sinaysky brings us this excellent wintertime drone video of a historic train line in the region of Karelia in Northwestern Russia.  It's called the Ruskeala Express, and it's a steam-powered train which runs between the town of Sortavala and Ruskeala's mountain park, one of its top attractions.  The Republic of Karelia is a Federal Subject (essentially, an oblast or province) of Russia, located north of St. Petersburg.  It's a largely forested land which is home to over 60,000 lakes.  

The traveling duo known as the DigitalTravelCouple brings us this spectacular drone video from the Portuguese island of Madeira, which lies off the coast of northwestern Africa.  The video opens with a beautiful shot of the sun hanging over a mountain ridge, followed by a view of an immense coastal cliff.  Other highlights include a "reveal" of a village tucked in the island's interior at the :42 mark, a giant rock arch near Ponta de Sao Laurenzio (1:03), the white clock tower in the town of Ribeira Brava (1:20), and much more.  

Prepared to be amazed by this magnificent 2020 drone reel from Iceland, compliments of AirVuz contributor _mishamartin.  The video opens with a shot from the top of a deep canyon, followed by a sequence flying over a mini-volcano looking towards two tiny satellite islands.  Then it's on to some coastal mountains, followed by a flyover of the famous Skógafoss waterfall.  Other highlights include a shot flying over an erupting geyser (at the 1:00 mark), some Icelandic wildlife (1:37), the semi-circular Godifoss waterfall (2:50), and more.  

Take an aerial tour of the Netherlands in this excellent 2020 compilation by former DVOW Winner By_ewold.  The video opens with a shot of an iconic windmill on the plains of Friesland, followed by a stunning bird-chasing sequence.  Starting at about the 1:05 mark, you'll fly over one of the fabled Dutch flower fields, and at 1:48 you'll see the De Haar Castle in Utrecht, the largest in the Netherlands.  Other highlights include the Pyramid of Austerlitz, also near Utrecht, the windmills of Zaanse Schans near Amsterdam, and more.  This video was a DVOY finalist in 2021. 

Check out this fantastic aerial compilation of the Alps Mountains by top AirVūz contributor Muhamad AbuShakra. Filmed in the winter of 2020-21, when travel was greatly restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Muhamad hiked the unexplored winter scenes in the Alps mountains in Germany and Austria.  The Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe, stretching approximately 1,200 km across eight Alpine countries.  This video earned a Drone Video of the Week nomination in March 2021.
