South America is home to some of the largest and fastest growing cities in the world. Many (although not all) were founded by Portuguese and Spanish conquerors in the 16th century. Some are in mountain valleys while other lie along key rivers or along the coasts. Drone pilot Rickdebenedetto shows the great city of Buenos Aires, Argentina under a nationwide quarantine to fight the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Spring of 2020. While the country didn't reach its first 100 confirmed cases until the third week of March, a nationwide quarantine was declared on March 19. With most of the confirmed cases concentrated in and around the national capital, one of the wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities in South America came to resemble a virtual ghost-town. This video earned a nomination in the Lockdown category at the 6th Annual NYCDFF.

Southeastern Brazil is home to the country's two primary urban centers: Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Each is capital of a state with the same name, and the cities are "only" about 435 km (around 250 mi) apart - practically neighbors by the enormous scale of Brazil. The two cities are a study in contrasts - Rio being the cultural capital of Brazil (as well as its capital city until 1960), Sao Paulo the business capital. Shot with a DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone, the video was taken in March, 2020, just as the country was implementing social distancing measures to fight the spread of the deadly virus. Peru's capital city Lima, located midway down its Pacific Coast, is a new city by Peruvian standards. It was founded in 1535 by a Spanish Conquistador who had conquered the Inca Empire around Cusco, the older city to the south. Now, Lima is home to a population of over 10 million, making it one of the top three cities in South America. 14Toothfilms used a DJI Mavic Pro drone to create this memorable aerial view of the Peruvian city, whose population exceeds the next largest city by roughly ten times.

Situated on the country's Caribbean Sea coastline, it's Colombia's busiest seaport by freight volume. During Colonial times, Cartagena was the Spanish Empire's most important port, and served as the conduit through which silver extracted from South America was transported to Europe. Ecuador's largest city and its commercial capital, Guayaquil became one of South America's worst "hotspots" during the Covid-19 pandemic in the Spring of 2020. As the national death rate spiked to three times the normal rate (with most Covid-19 related deaths unconfirmed), the health care system in this large port city was overwhelmed. Peu Ribeiro used a DJI Inspire 2 drone to create this stunning video of the Old Town of Salvador, Brazil. Salvador is the largest city in the state of Bahia and it's the fourth largest city in the country (after Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasilia) as well as the largest in the officially recognized Northeast Region. The historic city was "discovered" by the Spaniards in 1500 but settled by the Portuguese beginning in the mid-16th century. It is one of the oldest European settlements in the Western Hemisphere.

The center of Chile's third-largest metropolitan area, Concepción is situated near the middle of the country, well to the south of Santiago. The city was originally founded by Spanish conquistadores in 1550 well north of the Biobío River, river, but a series of earthquakes and other natural disasters led it to being relocated to its current location at the river's mouth 200 years later. It's one of Chile's most industrialized cities.

It's situated in the region of the same name, which is the third province up from the country's southern border with Chile. RG CAM created this spectacular aerial view of the 120th anniversary of one of the youngest cities in Brazil. Belo Horizonte is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil, the second largest state in the country. Belo Horizonte is the sixth largest city in Brazil, and its metropolitan area is the third largest after Rio and Sao Paulo. The city as it exists today was built as part of a plan for a new state capital to replace the gold mining town Ouro Preto, which lies to its southeast.

Located in southern Peru, Cusco was the seat of the Inca Empire from the 13th century until the area was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century. Contributor Martigen traveled to Peru in early 2018 with a DJI Mavic Pro drone. He created this amazing aerial video of this city which lies at an altitude of 3.4k m (11.2k) feet and which is the gateway to the great Incan royal estate and citadel of Macchu Picchu. Like Macchu Picchu, Cusco has also been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage cultural site.

The main part of the city shares the island of São Vicente with the island's namesake city. Established by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Santos is home to the busiest container port in South America and the continent's second-largest port as measured by overall freight tonnage.
