Cities exist in part to help connect different parts of the world to each other, and one of the best ways to measure the importance of a city is to look at its connectedness. One of the most widely respected ranking system is a three tier system established by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Under the GAWC system, about 50 global cities are designated as "Alpha" cities. There are four sub-grades, ranging from A++ These are not necessarily the largest cities in each country (although oftentimes they are), but they are deemed to be the most connected to the outside world based on many measures ranging from international bank deposits to international air travel routes.
