Extreme Climbing by Drone

VolcaDrone...

Among the many useful applications of drones is to film rock climbers.  For obvious reasons, it is extremely difficult to film climbers on steep ridges and cliffs other than from the perspective of the climber, which is limited and can be dangerous.  That's where drones come in.  They can be piloted from some distance away, and can film the climbers from a variety of angles, showing the difficulty and/or beauty of the physical location in a manner that can't be matched, as you'll see in this amazing drone video by VolcaDrone Productions.

The reveal shots in this piece are unreal - specifically the one which occurs 24 seconds into the video. It should come as no surprise that it comes from 2017 Drone Video of the Year nominee and drone pilot Scientik. This piece, nominated for Drone Video of the Week, was shot in the mountains of beautiful Bosnia and Herzegovina in Southeastern Europe on his DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone. Filled with 100% aerial shots of those gorgeous mountain scenics, a mountain climber, a tightrope walker, and more, it's another gem by Scientik.

Dance on the face of Stetind

hamed.razz...

Stetind is one of Norway's most famous mountains.  It's based in the country's Northern region, in Nordland County.  Although its peak elevation is a modest 1.4k meters or around 4.65k ft., its prominence and smooth face make it a very difficult climb.  In fact, the mountain wasn't scaled until 1910, decades after much taller mountains had been tackled.  In this outstanding drone video by hamed.razzaghi, you'll get a bird's eye view of some epic climbing action on what is sometimes called Norway's National Mountain.

Climbing The Face in Halong Bay, Vietnam

Dice Trave...

Halong Bay in northern Vietnam is distinguished by the presence of many large karst rock islands made of limestone, similar to the islands of Phang Nga Bay in Southern Thailand.  The sides of these islands are sheer cliffs which drop almost vertically into the South China Sea.  For this reason, the area is known to rock climbers all over the world.  In this video, AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Dice Travels used a drone to film a friend climbing the Cliff, one of the steepest rock faces in the area.

Valencia has some of Europe's most magnificent rock formations, and that means some epic opportunities for rock climbing.  A popular climbing spot is in the hills above the town of Redován, which is at the foot of a small mountain range called the Sierra de Callosa, one of the many mini-ranges which dot the Iberian Peninsula.  In this video, you'll get a drone's eye view of some brave climbers scaling these beautiful formations, which lie in the southern part of the autonomous Valencia region.

Rock climbing is an activity that really was made for drones.  Until the advent of drones, filming climbers scaling cliffs and large rock formations was almost impossible - literally there was no way to capture much action with a ground camera or even a helicopter.  Now this is no longer a constraint.  In this video, contributor 1LifeStudios used a drone to create this epic video of a rock climber tackling a complex rock formation called the Spires in the Petro Chicao area of Central Mexico.

One of the world's top spots for boulder-climbing (rock climbing without protection) is the Hueco Tanks in western Texas.  Situated just east of El Paso in a valley between the Hueco and Franklin Mountains, most of the area is protected under both Texas and US preservation laws due in part to rock paintings which are believed to be up to 8k years old.  In this drone video by Feben Earth, you'll get a glimpse of the bouldering culture here which attracts climbers from all over the world.

The rocky cliffs of the Faroe Islands have been drawing rock climbers from around the world to this North Atlantic archipelago.  In this video, top contributor and pilot DroneDirector used a DJI Phantom 4 drone to film some climbers scaling the vertical cliffs which abound throughout the islands, which are a territory of the nation of Denmark.  It is definitely not a place for people who are scared of cold water -  the North Atlantic waters rarely exceed 11 degrees Celsius (about 50 degrees Farenheit).

Contributor Houman_the__sloth created this amazing drone video of one of the top rock climbing spots in Spain.  Using a DJI Mavic Air drone, he aerially filmed a climber scaling the rock faces near the village of Chulila.  Part of the comarca of Los Serranos, an eastern district of the province of Valencia.  It's located about an hour's drive northwest of the city of Valencia.  The rock formations of the Valencia provinces have turned the region into something of a magnet for climbers around the world.

Here is a spectacular aerial video of some climbers tackling one of Italy's best-known rock climbing spots.  It's called Pietra di Bismantova, and it's what's known as an inselberg - basically, an isolated rock formation.  It's located in the north-central part of the country, in the province of Reggio Emilia which is part of the Emilia-Romagna Region.  It certainly hasn't hurt that this giant plateau earned mention in Dante's Divine Comedy, perhaps the single most well known work of medieval literature.

Contributor and pilot FreD ...//... used a drone to aerially film a climbing session on a via ferrata in the French Alps.  Via ferrata means "iron path", and it's basically a way for climbers to tackle climbing routes that would otherwise be too dangerous.  It is based on the use of a steel cable which is attached to the rock every ten meters (around 30 feet) or so.  As the technologies to protect climbers from injury has advanced, so has the number of via ferratas.  In France, there are now over two hundred.

One of the most popular spots for rock climbing in Turkey is in the area around the Ballikayalar Park, which lies in the Gebzi district of the Koaceli province in the Marmara region.  It's situated less than an hour's drive east and a bit south of Istanbul, near the Gulf of Izmit (an extension of the Sea of Marmara).  The limestone outcrops here make for some great climbing.  In this drone video by kaplan murat kelo, you'll get a unique perspective on climbers tackling these formations.  The video was shot with a DJI Mavic Pro 2.

If you think Norway has a monopoly on climbing spots in Scandinavia, you will reconsider when you see this drone video by top contributor and pilot hamed.razzaghi.  The video was shot in an area of Bohuslän, a province in the southwestern part of the country.  It's home to some cliffs which aren't especially high but which present long smooth faces with enough cracks to make for great trad climbing - "trad" being climber-speak for "traditional" climbing, in which pre-placed bolts are not employed.

Bigwall climbing in Norway

While the mountains of Northern Norway aren't especially high by alpine standards, they feature some of the most spectacularly vertical peaks.  That's why the area has become a haven for rock climbers around the world.  In this drone video by hamed.razzaghi, you'll get an aerial view of some very skilled climbers tacking these sheer cliffs.  One thing which may surprise you is the obviously mild temperatures here - despite being located above the Arctic Circle, the climate here is surprisingly mild.

Ice Climbing by Drone: iced waterfall in italian Alps NOT YET RATED

If you think rock climbing in the Alps would be challenging, how about climbing an iced waterfall.  Really?  Contributor Enrico Pescantini used a drone to film a climber scaling the Cascata di Cambrembo waterfall, one of Italy's largest, in its frozen state during the depths of winter.  The waterfall is located in the Italian Alps in the Lombardy region of northern Italy.  Despite its copious water flow, during the frigid winter months it completely freezes, allowing it to be scaled like a rock cliff.

New AirVuz contributor Unlock Puerto Rico brings us this fantastic drone video of a rock climbing session in Puerto Rico.  The Vértigo is a climb in Cerro Las Tetas, a pair of mountain peaks in the municipality of Salinas, on the island's southern (Caribbean Sea) coastline.  Part of the Las Piedras del Collado Nature Reserve, the peaks reach a maximum altitude of just over 2.75k ft. above sea level (around 840 m).  They are part of the Sierra de Cayey, one of several ranges which cover the island.
