Drone Video Captures Natural Wonder of the Turkish "Eternal Flames"

This drone video by pilot 'iskenderfilm' captures the unique geographical features of Mount Chimaera. Mount Chimaera, also known as Yanartaş, in the Antalya Province of southwestern Turkey is the site of a fascinating natural phenomena. About a dozen flames constantly emit from the rocks with no apparent fuel source.

 

The flames have been burning from a type of methane gas venting from the slopes for thousands of years. The "eternal flames" created the myth of Chimera, a fire-breathing beast with a lion's head and body that has the head of a goat arising from its back and a tail that ends with the head of a snake. For hundreds of years, the flames were used by sailors as a landmark during the night. Now hikers use the flames' heat to brew tea as they travel along the Lycian Way, a 311-mile footpath.
